How is diablo 2's population?

well i plan to rebuy the diablo 2 battlechest today havnt played that game in years an wanna play it again, jus waiting for D3 cmon blizz... anyways how is D2's population? do ppl still play? i heard its pretty much just bots/hackers nowadays an rebuying it is a waste of money, that true?
