Well, apart from generally educating the future population, it offers a center where kids can come when their parents aren't able to provide full time care at home, it teaches them to be better citizens and to fit in with the community. Also, many schools use their facilities, such as halls, theatres etc, as public function halls, so benefiting the wider community.
